Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have become the first carriers in Vietnam to trial the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Travel Pass mobile application, aiming to reopen the international aviation market.

The IATA Travel Pass is a mobile application under development allowing travelers to simply and securely store and manage certifications for Covid-19 tests or vaccines.

The information through the IATA Travel Pass can be shared with border authorities requiring testing or proof of vaccination as a condition of international travel during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. A critical aspect is the fact that the information supplied is verified. It is a secure means to manage health requirements, much more efficient than paper processes.

The trial is implemented in June. Selected passengers will be invited to download the IATA Travel Pass app to their mobile phones, create a digital ID comprising their photo and passport information and fill in flight details to receive information on entry requirements at the destination. Before departure, passengers will be required to get tested at eligible clinics based on the IATA registry, then share the test results digitally and confirm flight status with the airline ahead of being at the airport. No verification will go to an airline or a government without the authorization of the traveler.

With this app, IATA also aims to provide governments with the confidence to reopen borders without imposing quarantines on incoming travelers.
