America’s frozen pangasius over, opportunity for Vietnam’s seafood exports to the US

The US stock of frozen pangasius has been exhausted since the end of February, while the production of farmed native catfish has plummeted.

The US importers are forced to increase the amount of pangasius from Vietnam. 

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), by the first half of May 2021, the total value of pangasius exports to the US market reached 113.5 million USD, an year – over – year increase of 44.1%.

Up to now, the value of pangasius export to the US market over the past 5 months is growing steadily.

The average export price of pangasius to the US market in 2020 is lower than in 2019 and in the first quarter of this year, the average price of frozen pangasius fillets exported to the US increased to 2.87 USD per kilo. This price is lower than the average export price of the past two years.

The US stock of frozen pangasius has been exhausted since the end of February, while the production of farmed native catfish has plummeted.

According to the US Department of Commerce, in the first half of this year, the country also imported frozen catfish, eel, snakehead, and tilapia products from Brazil, El Salvador, Norway, South Korea, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Burma and Ghana.
